Special Meal Days

As part of our cross-cultural learning, we were asked to participate in three Special Meal lunches. The first meal was what you might find as a typical meal in North Africa or the Middle East. It consisted of meatballs, salad (diced tomatoes, onions (Scott’s favorite!), and cucumbers) and bread. Of course, in those cultures, they don’t find it necessary to use utensils and everyone eats out of a community bowl. Needless to say, we made certain that everyone at our table washed their hands thoroughly! Scott got creative with his and made it into a sub sandwich. I tore off pieces of my bread and used it to scoop up the meatballs and salad.
The second special meal was Hungarian Goulash. Beef with noodles and cabbage (it was better than I thought it would be) and bread. And our third and final special meal was of the Asian persuasion. Curried chicken with rice and condiments of tomatoes, pineapple, coconut, peanuts, raisins & some kind of special sauce (can’t remember the name of it!). Because the curry in the chicken can be spicy for some people, they finish off their meal with cucumber salad.
Not only are these special meal experiences to help us to adapt to new cultures, but it is also a time for us to pray for those cultures and think about some of the challenges we might face when we get on the field and we have to eat food we’re not used to eating (or else risk offending the one serving us the food). This exercise made me really thankful that we’re going to Mexico where they eat chilaquiles (nachos for breakfast) and carne asada tacos!!
