Before Jason & Kathy came to visit, we sent them a list of items that we were missing from the states (mainly food!) so they could bring a few of each of them to us. We’ll, little did we know that they had involved our church in Kansas City, so we ended […]

During our short break from classes, our friends from Kansas City, MO, Jason and Kathy came to visit. What a blessing and encouragement they were to us. Kathy, being the “details” person she is, had the entire vacation planned, which was a big blessing to us because it allowed us to just […]

Okay, maybe it’s not out for summer, but at least we’re out for about 2 weeks. We’re ready for the break. We recently received our language results and Scott is at the level he needs to be to go to Mexico and I’m right on his heels. Praise the Lord! We’re still […]
Game Night

One Saturday evening we had three of the single young people from church over to our house for dinner and some games. It was our way of thanking of one of them, Roger, for coming to our house every Saturday to practice Spanish. The night started with some Mexican food (we checked […]
Holy Week
Monday, March 24th, 2008Click Photo to Enlarge
Each year, the week before Easter is designated as Holy Week (or Semana Santa). We were out of school for the entire week but for everyone else, those who worked in the city only had Thursday and Friday off. So, most of San Jose was shut down for those two days; no […]
Cultural Day

Every semester the language school dedicates one day of classes to what they call Cultural Day. This gives the teachers an opportunity to teach the students about their culture. They offered classes of Latin Music, Latin Dancing, Soccer, Costa Rican fruits and cooking classes. Despite the popular opinion, all food south of […]
A Place of Our Very Own!!
Sunday, March 2nd, 2008Click Photo to Enlarge
The day we had been waiting for has finally arrived. A place we could call home. Living with a Tico family has its benefits and we were thankful for the opportunity to live with Noel and Roxana, but there’s just something about having your own place. And the timing of it all […]
The First Semester is Half Over!
Sunday, February 24th, 2008It’s hard to believe that we’ve completed 7 weeks of language school. Friday each student received their mid-term evaluations. Praise the Lord, Scott and I received very positive feedback from each of our teachers. We still have so much to learn, so please pray that we will have patience because we want to be fluent NOW!
Prayer Walking
Sunday, February 17th, 2008Click Photo to Enlarge
One of the awesome privileges I’ve had so far in Costa Rica is the opportunity to walk around the neighborhood and pray. Every two weeks, Jan and I walk a different route around where we live and pray for business owners, daycare centers, people in the parks, government buildings and schools. We […]
Ladies Retreat

This past weekend, I was privileged to attend a ladies retreat right here in San José. This was not your ordinary ladies retreat. This was one whose focus was ministering to missionary women. A team of 16 ladies representing two churches, one in Oklahoma and the other in Arkansas, lavished us with […]
Going to the Market
Sunday, February 3rd, 2008Click Photo to Enlarge
One of the perks of living in Central America is the existence of the farmer’s market. Yes, I know, they have these in the states as well, but here, it is a way of life. It is a very common sight to see people walking a mile or two, pulling their carts […]
Housesitting
Sunday, January 27th, 2008This week we said goodbye to our Tico host family and moved into a house that we will be caring for the next four weeks while its owners are on vacation. This means several things: 1. We’ll have a little less rice and beans. 2. We’ll be closer to the school and, 3. We’ll be […]
Classes
Sunday, January 20th, 2008This week begins our third week of classes and things are starting to pick up. In the beginning, the teachers have gone easy on us, but now, the material is getting more complicated and we are spending three to six hours per day doing homework and studying. Don’t get me wrong, we have a good […]
Scott Preaches

A few weeks ago, our pastor, Jonathan asked Scott to preach on the second Sunday of January. So, with the intensity that is Scott, he put much study and practice into the task of preparing for this message. Scott read the text of his message (2 Timothy 1:1-9) and gave the introduction, […]
Orientation & First Day of Classes
Sunday, January 6th, 2008Click Photo to Enlarge
With the time for relaxation behind us, we now look forward to what lies ahead at language school. Our experience began with 4 days of orientation, most of which we knew or had already experienced because of our time spent in barefoot (October thru December). One day was spent being tested to […]
Trip to Nicaragua

After a 4 hour bus ride back to San José, we spent the night and woke up really early the next morning to catch a bus to Granada, Nicaragua. Granada is famous for its original colonial architecture and is located about an hour south of the capitol of Nicaragua, Managua. This city […]

Now that we have a break from our language training classes until January 3rd, we decided to take some time to travel to see some of the more beautiful parts of Costa Rica. Our travels took us to the west coast, or the Pacific, where there is abundant wildlife and beautiful beaches. […]
Christmas at the Coffee Plantation

Christmas came a little early for the kids on the coffee plantation. The four missionary couples who participate in the Bible study on Wednesday nights decided to pull our resources and buy food for all of the families represented at the study (6 families in all!). We also bought each child a […]
Finishing Up Barefoot
Friday, November 30th, 2007Click Photo to Enlarge
Our final three weeks of barefoot language classes have been centered more around learning grammar than practicing conversation, which is what we focused on our first three weeks. This should give us a strong foundation as we enter language school on January 9th. Don’t get me wrong, our barefoot classes haven’t been […]

On Wednesday nights we drive out to a coffee plantation about 30 minutes from our house for a home Bible study. Our mentors, Allen and Rebecca Alexander, have started a house church there made up of 4 adult women and about 15 kids! The kids range in age from 4-14. They listen […]
